Packaging material is one of the greatest generators to pollution for its short product life cycle and nowadays over 50% of packaging material are made of paper cardboard. There is no doubt that the manufacture and disposal of paper and cardboard products have some sort of impact on the environment.

The paper industry impacts the environment through:
 

• Logging operations – many types of paper contain fiber from forest operations.

 

• Manufacturing process – paper making is very water and energy intensive. Along with the use of bleaching agents this can produce water and air pollution.

 

• Landfill – discarded paper and cardboard uses scarce landfill space. As paper breaks down it contributes to leachate that can contaminate groundwater, while also generating the potent greenhouse gas methane.

 
The fungal-based biomass material provides perfect solution as,
 

• Product cost is 20% lower than paper cardboard and the price of cardboard will soar while the price of fungal-based biomass materials will decrease in the next five years,

 

• Papermaking results in deforestation while fungal-based biomass materials will biodegrade and nourish the soil.                                                                       
  
• The production process of fungal-based biomass materials has the least energy consumption, lower emissions and no pollution.
